Once Over (Again)

I had an early morning (7 a.m.) appointment today with either a designer or a general contractor or both. I think he's both, I think he was from a design/build company. We went through the whole house to talk about what was needed in each room. We also talked a little bit about the deck and storage.

Aside from some smaller aspects of the kitchen and bathroom in progress, we're mostly focussing on the living room/dining room wall and the fireplace. I'm hoping to do those both at once and by the same designer so that they'll sort of match. He did some quick sketches for the fireplace and the wall and said he would put in some design time on the bid so that I could see full fledged drawings and approve them before we start.

Now I just hope the money's not too much. We also talked about stuff to be done in the basement. It was fun to think about, but I'm not sure what I'll be able or willing to do. We'll see, I guess I should receive some bids before the end of the day. Whew!

Sounds nice. Check to see if you can get a design for everything, then price some projects separately to see what you can afford in the short run, and what you can put off. The people I worked with were willing to do that, though pricing was tricky because of the efficiencies of doing it all at once. Wow, you are doing alot, and fast. Amazing.

It was nice. It was nice to pull my head up and look at the big picture again. I did take care to specify that I needed things to be priced piecemeal. He said he understood and he'd write it up "in detail that's easy for you [me] to navigate". That email's been sitting in my inbox since yesterday. I read the text but not the attachment. $75/hr for project management and 25% for materials they purchase instead of me (which is how he prefers to operate). In this scenario he'd takeover project management even of the tile guy. That alone might be worth it. I hate making phone calls like the one I made to TileGuy this morning.
